Campaign to Re-Elect Trési Houpt, Garfield County Commission

Trési Houpt's 2006 re-election campaign was my opportunity to pour a wide range of skills and experience into a single project. I volunteered and jumped in. At our dining room table, I and the re-election committee brainstormed strategies. I wrote and edited campaign literature. I designed ads and brochures, created bumper stickers, buttons — even a water bottle label. I produced radio spots in my home studio. And after the election, we celebrated victory.

Aspen Valley Medical Foundation Health Website

Web projects have a life of their own Technologies rapidly evolves, and clients, with a little help, adopt the changes.. AVMF’s website began as “brochure-ware” and a site they were proud to share. As the capabilities of the staff increased (and the size of the email list), so the function of their site. Integrating Donate Now provides the opportunity to capture donations and broadcast emails. The Neighbor-to-Neighbor fund raising campaign is now largely digital and effectively so. Now the client asks, “Can we put the newsletter online and email teasers to everyone?” The answer is, “Yes, that and more.”

Climbing Magazine Print Buying

Low cost, high quality, good service - pick two. The printing market for niche magazine bears this out. I became fascinated with the task of putting our printing out for bid. An entire process had to be detailed, quantified and articulated to a more-than-eager cast of career salesmen who, for the asking, provided a remarkable education in publishing. And I asked.

Soon comes the apples to oranges puzzles, breakdowns and projections. Spreadsheets became my friend. A modest amount of wining and dining preceded the contract (checking the math, again). Finally comes marriage and a honeymoon followed by a slow or perhaps abrupt realization which two out of the three you ended up with. I learned much.

The Aspen Times Community Beat

My general theory of photojournalism is whoever stays the longest and and shoots the most usually gets the best photo. So I stayed for the whole high school volleyball game on Friday nights. I stayed at the council meeting until the last curmudgeon had their say. I went with Dr. Berkeley twice to Chihuahua to photograph and write the story of his medical mission. I stayed at the Woody Creek Tavern until Hunter Thompson pulled his long-barrel pistol out.

I was rewarded with the tenderness of a coach carrying his injured player off the court. I was rewarded with the fierce anger of trailer-owners confronting an EPA official. I caught the shot of Hunter "plugging" his book. I was rewarded with respect for being the one who stuck it out. The best reward, however, was being wholly enmeshed in a community and serving it with stories and pictures.
